Hello I’m new here and this is my first post. I am a hvac installer. I am wanting to see what the easiest way is to cut a 18 x 10 inch hole in square duct with the rectangle being 2 inches off the top and 1 inch off the side even on top and sides.

    Welcome aboard!

I have found the easiest way to get a hole in a duct is to tell someone else to do it! lol Now, the serious part. Is it already hanging? Do you have electric snips? Do you have an apprentice, wait, we already went over that…

    If thinking was easy,

    everyone would do it!

  • I usually start with my step bit.

  • Yep then follow up with the electric shears.

    Electric shears are for sissys.

I’m tired of these mediocre “semi flammable” refrigerants. If we’re going to do it let’s do it right.

Unless we change direction we are likely to end up where we are going.

That’s the one the guy I worked for uses.
I just consider it exercising my grip and I use hand shears.

Are you sure it’s not the best thing since flex duct?

Yeah but you’ll see every squeeze in the cut vs one straight line _____________________

I don’t know when I compare my cuts with his mine are better although I’m sure there’s a lot of different shoes out there and maybe some do better than the one he uses. Although I think the biggest thing is that often it’s not really the right direction whereas with shears I can have several pairs and always have the right direction for whatever cut I’m making.

  • Oh and doesn’t everybody use a duct hammer and a flat blade screwdriver to start the hole? A step bit is cheating. In fact I’ve seen a guy cut a round hole with a flat blade screwdriver and a hammer and it looked darn good I was highly impressed.
