  • Check military surplus. Not sure I would want any under my pants.

Try a knee brace with wife’s bra liner to get size down.

  • For a while I was using soft athletic ones. I think they were advertised as volleyball knee pads.

They work great but they tend to stink after a few days and need washing

You look like a ‘tard (or worse, a tile setter) walking around with knee pads outside your pants.

Not to mention they are less comfortable when they bunch your pants up beneath the straps

    Comfort/pain trumps looks.

    Only wear when needed.

But by choosing under-pant knee pads, you can achieve comfort AND maintain your image.

Unless there’s a 4ft tall curb adapter, yeah, unfortunately I’m generally kneeling down some working on rooftop units.

  • I care so little about appearance w/ kneepads. Saving the actual knees I am concerned about. No kneepads or a knee cushion? Go home.
I had one guy that put up such a stink he quit, we remained friends and 10 years later he called and said the Doctor said “Your swollen knee could of been prevented by protecting your knees by using some sort of knee protection”, its too late now. Yeah I know I’m a dick, but this is my Business so my rules apply.

  • Similar to Techman, knee protection for me trumps looks. I have to be careful with my knees due to decades of neglect.

Some techs wear cargo pants or whatever that have pouches to slip knee pads into, but those knee pads have to be rather thin.

One of the main problems I have with knee pads is they slip down. So I made some ‘straps’ to hold them up. First generation used cut up coat hanger material for fast on and off. Second generation incorporated 1/4″ nylon rope. Third generation now uses carabiners for quick on/off, with the nylon rope looped over my belt.

Once the rope with carabiner is on, it stays on the rest of the day, knee pads go on and off as required. After rope is on, carabiners go in pocket when not in use, barely visible. When using the setup, and someone sees you, they know you are serious about getting some work done.

Boss dude walked up one day when I was wearing them, he commented how cool they looked.

When in use, the carabiners lie flat against your leg, just above the knee pads and gives that look that you are a professional and you shouldn’t get in the way.

I do a triple evac with nitro to remove non condensables.

    I’m feelin’ a little peculiar.

  • I have various pads I use depending on the situation.

Cardboard~ inexpensive, easy on the knees yet solid, easy to find a replacement, works as a liner for a foam pad when you have to get down where its wet.

Foam~ What I use now is from an old memory foam from a sleep number bed, chair or sofa cushion works as well, thick, bulky, more surface area for kneeling on a larger area.

Ridged foam kneeling pad~ This on is a McGuire something about 18x14x2 has a handle to strap to a bag/carry, small for getting into tight places, good for working in front of furnaces

  • I know a paint and body guy who uses rigid blue foam insulation board to kneel or lay on.

“Is this before or after you fired the parts cannon at it?” – senior tech

I’m tired of these mediocre “semi flammable” refrigerants. If we’re going to do it let’s do it right.

Unless we change direction we are likely to end up where we are going.

    Need pics.

  • I rarely kneel if I’m gonna be in that position for any length of time I grab a milk crate or 5 gallon bucket.
