Why doesn’t a 2 story foyer or family room count as double the sq feet, as there is double the air to be cooled?

I have almost 500 “extra” square feet of space as I have a large 2 story family room and 2 story foyer. The heat from my first floor rises upstairs and makes the upstairs very hot in the summer.

  • Because square footage or cubic footage has absolutely nothing to do with cooling/heating requirements.

I’m tired of these mediocre “semi flammable” refrigerants. If we’re going to do it let’s do it right.

Unless we change direction we are likely to end up where we are going.

  • Sounds like you have a problem with air distribution likely due to bad duct design.

  • It sounds like the area wasn’t properly figured & it has nothing to do with how the sq. ft. of the area was or was not counted.
What counts most is the area exposed to the outside or unconditioned air & glass. That needs to be accounted for when doing a load calculation.
If you have a 23×23 room with three exterior walls & an 8 ft. ceiling it would be 552 sq. ft. of outside wall to be calculated.
That same room with 16 ft. ceiling would now have double(1104 sq. ft) of exterior wall to be calculated. Then the glass, floors ,ceiling area & infiltration has to be accounted for.
