Pump down
Does anyone pump the r410 into the outside unit and then do a change out? Im upgrading my system and my brother n law said we can just pump the freon back into the system and do the change out. I asked about type of tank is needed to hold the freon while changin the Air handle and outside heat pump
If the condensing unit can handle the full charge thats fine. Most cant handle it so the rest gets recovered.
It might hold it all, but if a Micro Channel coil, maybe not.

Thank you! How do I know if it can handle it? I don’t want Freon in my house when we change the air handler
I have an Amanda (Goodman) 2.5 ton unit

If he does it for a living then there’s not much to worry about. Just let him do it.

I tell you what half the town may trust you to fix their air conditioner but then your family will question you.![]()

I’m tired of these mediocre “semi flammable” refrigerants. If we’re going to do it let’s do it right.
Unless we change direction we are likely to end up where we are going.

Whats wrong with refrigerant?
Its already in your house!
He isn’t licensed just worked with commercial hvac for a long time. Im not sure I trust the old pull the 410 into the compressor truck. Idk what’s wrong my AC I had a tech look at it and he said my refrigerant was low and he wanted to refill it. I said system don’t leak and I want to find the leak! It’s 10 years old and im going to upgrade.

When in doubt, recover the gas.

I was mostly joking but it is funny to me that my family seems to take my advice less than anybody else.
Personally I always recover the refrigerant into a tank because I never know what is going to be happening to the old equipment most likely it’ll get chopped up and thrown in the scrap yard and it just makes one more step for the guy trying to scrap it if there is refrigerant in it.
